SMART GOALS

When a New Year begins, I can’t help but feel excited about the fresh start that awaits us. There’s an undeniable energy in the air as people gear up to tackle those goals they’ve been dreaming of all year long.

Did you know that nearly 50% of us set New Year’s resolutions? Yet, by the end of January, about 25% have already given up, and only a mere 8-10% manage to stick with them throughout the year. The most popular resolutions often revolve around losing weight, exercising more, saving money, and enhancing our relationships.

What’s the secret to success? It’s all about setting specific, measurable goals and having a solid support system in place. This combination can dramatically boost your chances of sticking to your resolutions!

If improving your health—both physical and mental—has been on your resolution list for the past few years, but you’ve struggled to make it happen, you’re not alone. Imagine having someone in your corner to help you plan, guide, and support you every step of the way.

What is a SMART Goal?

A SMART goal is a framework for setting clear and achievable objectives. The acronym SMART stands for:

  1. SPECIFIC: The goal should be clear and specific, answering the questions of what you want to achieve, who is involved, where it will happen, and why it’s important.
  1. MEASURABLE: There should be criteria for measuring progress. This helps you stay on track and know when you’ve accomplished your goal. Ask yourself how you will measure success.
  1. ACHIEVABLE: The goal should be realistic and attainable. Consider whether the goal is feasible given your current resources and constraints.
  1. RELEVANT: The goal should matter to you and align with your broader objectives. It should be worthwhile and have significance in your life or work.
  1. TIMEBOUND: Set a deadline for achieving the goal. This creates a sense of urgency and helps prioritize your efforts.

For example, instead of saying, “I want to lose weight,” a SMART goal would be, “I will lose 10 pounds in the next three months by exercising three times a week and eating healthier meals.” This goal is specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound.
